February 27, 2008 - Baby Found Dead
Last night, a baby was found outside Presbyterian St. Luke’s  Hospital. The baby was taken inside and when emergency procedures to revive it failed, the baby was pronounced dead.

According to news reports, whoever dropped off the baby went to the emergency telephone outside the hospital and pushed the button. When the phone was answered, the person set the baby down and fled. A hospital worker who went out to check the phone found the baby and took it into the hospital.

The police are now searching for the person who brought the baby, because the Colorado Safe Haven Law does not apply. To qualify for immunity under the law, the parent, (mother or father) must hand the unharmed baby to a fire fighter at a fire station, or an employee at a hospital. If the baby had not been harmed, and the person had handed it to a hospital employee, they could have walked away – no questions asked – and no threat from the police.

As it is now, however, the person may be prosecuted for infant abandonment resulting in death.

We are a group of people who were brought together by a desire to save the lives of newborn infants. We came together when we heard that 3 newborn infants were found abandoned and dead in the Denver area during a 2 week period in the summer of 2004. Abandoning an infant is a totally senseless act in Colorado and all 49 other states, because the law says a parent may take their unharmed infant to any hospital or fire station and hand it to an employee there, no questions asked.

Our organization is dedicated to spreading the word about this law. There are close to 400,000 women and girls between the ages of 13 and 24 in Colorado. We must insure every one of them knows about this law.
